This is a good summary of the story from IMDB: Two high school students, Mitsuha and Taki, live very different lives. Mitsuha is a traditional Japanese girl who lives with her dad and goes to a traditional all girls’ school. Taki is a modern day boy who lives with his mother and goes to a modern day all boys’ school. One day the two accidentally switch bodies, and Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body. This event happens to them one month in the future. After realizing what has happened, the two run away and find themselves in a strange town called Tsubasa. For the next month the two see how life is in Tsubasa from a different perspective and learn to appreciate each other. I read the synopsis, it doesn’t make much sense but I’m going to go over it anyway.
Your Name in Japanese
Traditionally in Japanese, the name Kimi means light while the name Noemi means light. In English, Kimi No Namida literally means the girl who shines the light to her love, while Noemi means the boy who shines the light to his love. Kimi’s life as Kimi becomes a series of bizarre and often tragic events. As Kimi struggles to navigate the confusing relationships around her, a discovery about her identity and mysterious events within her own life lead to many inexplicable choices. One thing I enjoyed about the film was the unexpected and hilarious twist I wasn’t expecting in the movie. As Kimi is transported back and forth to Noemi’s life, the script shows unexpected and imaginative moments which can only come from the writer Makoto Shinkai.
