Ishiwatari drew inspiration for Guilty Gear’s character designs from samurai movies, while providing his own ideas for its moves. In 1990, Street Fighter had just gone gold and Street Fighter II was launching next year. But Ishiwatari saw that developers weren’t listening to fan demand. And in a bid to stand out in an industry driven by corporate interests, he decided he’d make a fighting game inspired by and catering to the edgy, at-the-time rebellious inner me who knew he wanted to do something on his own. Ishiwatari founded Japan’s Arc System Works (later renamed Team Strange) and they spent a year or two tinkering with designs and ideas. Ishiwatari was particularly drawn to developing fighters around female characters and had a few in mind, but admits he wasn’t quite satisfied.



The basic fundamentals of the game’s combat remain the same. Each character has the standard arsenal of a strong normal attack and a less-than-perfect special attack. The special moves are typically a mix of standard moves and those that have an added set of conditions to make the characters safer, but the true beauty is in the unscripted chaos that erupts in every combatant’s routine. Characters are caught in violent situations, and if they are able to recover from their vulnerable state, they end up landing a killing blow. This makes the game a fast and furious affair, similar to Street Fighter. However, the added verticality adds another layer to the fighting mechanics.

Beyond the core fighting games, Ishiwatari designed so many new characters and game modes – to make up for

the lack of mainstream attention the games received – that the games eventually came to receive the title “manga

fighter.” Now, 25 years later the Guilty Gear series has become a legitimate fighting game powerhouse – going toe-to-toe

with the industry’s top fighters, including Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and Injustice 2, which Ishiwatari worked on.

The developer has come a long way from a promising sophomore effort in 1994. As its creator gets ready to

celebrate his 25th anniversary, we take a closer look at how it all went down, from the concept to the

production and beyond. Is this a fighting game? To understand Ishiwatari’s history, we must understand his roots.


I know there are a lot of other games that may have been mentioned here, but these are the ones that are the

most talked about. I know for sure I’ll see some fighting games on the show floor at Fan Expo Canada this year,

but it looks like the one I’ll be buying is Guilty Gear.
